This is the classic Portobello Road Gin 171 blend…with added punch! Bottled at a hefty 57% ABV instead of the regular 42% ABV, navy strength is a powerful alcoholic expression that is robust on both the palate and nose. The Navy are famous for giving rations of rum to their sailors in days gone by but they would also frequently carry gin – this was always at a strength of at least 50.5% ABV but was often much stronger even than that. The history books suggest that the reason for the high alcohol content wasn’t simply for the benefit of jolly sailors, but was actually the proof level at which the ship’s gunpowder could still be fired should it accidentally get soaked with booze.
